Evaluating the Impacts of Auction Bidding Restrictions on Consumer Surplus and Behaviors - An Empirical Study of Penny Auctions

چکیده
Penny auction is an innovative, popular online auction format in which bidders are charged a small fee for placing each bid. A penny auction typically ends up with an extremely low final auction price, such that only one winning bidder can derive positive consumer surplus whereas other bidders lose out from the bidding costs. This makes it challenging to retain bidders who rarely win. Using a field experiment, we empirically evaluate how novel auction rules can improve overall consumer retention and longterm bidding participations. Specifically, we implemented three restrictions on bidding activities of customers. Our results show these restrictions enhance the overall number of bids by 50%. The intuition is to restrict the winning probability of a small group of bidders who won most of the auctions so that more bidders can enjoy the thrill and fun of winning an auction, inducing them to bid more in the long run.

Designing a Bidding Algorithm for Online Penny Auctions
In this paper we construct several penny auction bidding strategies for high-valued items. In order to do this, we first analyze the behaviors of bidders in penny auctions using data collected from the penny auction website, QuiBids. We then construct several strategies based on exploiting these behaviors. We produce an algorithm which estimates the profit produced by these strategies using rea...
متن کاملDo Auction Parameters Affect Buyer Surplus in E-Auctions for Procurement?
A the initial euphoria about Internet-enabled reverse auctions has given way to a cautious but widespread use of reverse auctions in business-to-business (B2B) procurement, there is a limited understanding of the effect of auction design parameters on buyer surplus. In this paper, we study the effect of bidding competition, information asymmetry, reserve price, bid decrement, auction duration, ...
متن کاملTowards an Intelligent Bidding Agent in QuiBids Penny Auctions
Empirical data shows that penny auctions on QuiBids are profitable for the auctioneer at the expense of the bidders. We seek to determine whether it is possible to design a bidding algorithm which outperforms actual QuiBids users, capable of consistently making a profit in QuiBids auctions over time. The ideal bidding strategy would win the item while minimizing the total number of bids placed ...
متن کاملReservation Values in Laboratory Auctions: Context and Bidding Behavior
We show that bidding behavior in laboratory first-price private-values auctions is sensitive to the way the outcomes of the auction are presented. We embed the auction in a context in which each subject purchases an object each period. A bidder’s idiosyncratic reservation value is the price at which he will purchase a close substitute outside the auction market in the event he does not win the ...
متن کاملThe Timing of Bid Placement and Extent of Multiple Bidding: An Empirical Investigation Using eBay Online Auctions
Online auctions are fast gaining popularity in today’s electronic commerce. Relative to offline auctions, there is a greater degree of multiple bidding and late bidding in online auctions, an empirical finding by some recent research. These two behaviors (multiple bidding and late bidding) are of “strategic” importance to online auctions and hence important to investigate. In this article we em...
